Excursion 1, 2nd Conference Day, 21st April 2004.

Visit of the Minoan Palace of Knossos followed by Cretan Gala Dinner at the Village of Arolithos

This excursion takes visitors to the most important Minoan Palace, Knossos , located 5 km south of Heraklion. The first palace of Knossos was built around 1900 BC. Two hundred years later it was destroyed by an earthquake and rebuilt, only to become grander and more luxurious. The final catastrophe occurred about 1500-1400 BC, with the eruption of the volcano of Santorini. The Palace was a labyrinthine complex, where according to the myth, Theseus killed the Minotaur.

The Gala Dinner will take place at the Arolithos Village where we will enjoy the local traditional food and watch folklore dances.  There, the visitor who is interested in folklore and would like to see in practice the artistic activity which has been kept unchanged today in embroidery, weaving, ceramics, hagiography and pottery should not miss that traditional village. It is a village with cobbled streets and with houses, which have tiled roofs and terrace. Its architecture is genuine Cretan using genuine old materials.  Arolithos reminds the visitors how Crete was several years ago.
